Account and sign-in
How do I sign in?
With your email: we send an 8-digit code, you type it in, and you're in. There's no password to remember. You can also continue with Apple or Google where they're offered.
Why do you ask for my date of birth?
Pact is for people 18 and over. We check your date of birth once and don't store it. We only keep the time you confirmed you're 18 or older.
My code didn't arrive or doesn't work.
Check your spam or promotions folder, then ask for a new code. A code works for about 10 minutes and only once. After several tries, wait a few minutes before asking again.
How do I sign out of a lost phone?
In the app, open Profile, tap the Settings gear, then Devices & sessions. You can sign out one device or all of them.
Real cost and the labels
What do asking price, verified actual and estimate mean?
- Asking price: what a listing says. We never call it what people pay.
- Verified actual: a number from a bill or lease a resident shared and we checked.
- Estimate: anything we calculate. It's always marked “est.”
How do you estimate the real cost of a home?
We start with the listed rent and the fees the listing says are required. Then we add the utilities and extra fees that residents nearby report. The result is marked as an estimate, and the breakdown shows where each part came from.
One-time move-in costs, like deposits, are listed separately and never added to the monthly number.
Why doesn't every home show a real cost?
When too few residents nearby have shared what they pay, we'd rather show nothing than guess. You'll see the asking price, and a way to ask someone who lives there.
A number looks wrong. What can I do?
Open the home and tap Report this listing, or email [email protected]. We look at every report.
Scans and privacy
What can I scan?
A lease, a rent receipt or a utility bill. Take a photo, or upload a PDF, JPG, PNG or HEIC file under 10 MB. Password-protected PDFs can't be read.
What happens to my document?
We read the rent, fees, utilities and dates, and black out account numbers, names, signatures and barcodes. You check every value before anything is saved. Only you can see the photo.
The original file is deleted after 72 hours. The blacked-out copy is deleted after 30 days, or after a year if you agree to keep it longer.
Will my landlord or neighbors see what I pay?
No. Your name is never shown next to your numbers. They only appear combined with other people's, and groups too small to hide one person stay hidden.
Someone sent me a “Share what you pay” link.
The link names a building and a home type. Open it, confirm you're 18 or older, sign in with your email, then snap your bill or lease and check what we read. It takes about two minutes. The person who sent the link doesn't see your numbers.
Roommate matching
How does matching work?
You answer questions about everyday life, like sleep, guests, cleaning and noise, and add your move window, budget and areas. Pact shows people whose answers and plans overlap with yours. Each card says how strong the overlap is, and Why this match explains it.
What doesn't matching use?
Matching never uses age, gender or pronouns, race or ethnicity, religion, sexuality, disability or health, family status, nationality, language, occupation, photos or what you write in your bio. Only your lifestyle answers and move plans count.
What are sample profiles?
During the beta, profiles marked Sample let you try swiping, matching and chat. They aren't real people, and messages to them aren't read by anyone.
Likes you
What is Likes you?
People who liked you show up in Likes you. Like them back and you match, and a chat opens. Passes are never shown to anyone.
Do I have to pay to see who liked me?
No. Likes you is free for everyone right now.
Pact Verified
What is Pact Verified?
An optional background check run by an independent screening company, not by Pact. It covers your identity plus record checks such as criminal history, the sex-offender registry and evictions, depending on the rules where you're moving.
What does the badge mean?
Only that the listed checks were completed. It isn't a guarantee that someone is safe, a credit score or a recommendation.
Does Pact see my Social Security number?
No. You enter your ID details on the screening company's secure page. Pact never stores them. Payment goes through Stripe, so Pact never sees your card number either.
I paid. What happens now?
After checkout you'll land on a page that sends you back to the Pact app. The screening company then asks for your details, and you'll get a notice in the app each time your check changes.
Can I dispute a result?
Yes. You can dispute any part of your check from the app, and the screening company will look into it again. Before any decision that goes against you, you'll get a notice, a copy of your rights and time to respond.
Can I get verified now?
Pact Verified is still being tested during the beta, so it may not be open to you yet.
Safety and reporting
How do I block or report someone?
Open their profile or your chat with them and choose Report and block. They aren't told who reported them.
What happens after I report?
A trained moderator reviews it. Threats and safety reports go first. Accounts or listings that break our Community Guidelines can be hidden or suspended. If your account was suspended and you think it's a mistake, email [email protected].
How do I report a listing?
Open the home and tap Report this listing. Use it for scams, wrong prices or anything that discriminates.
I'm in danger.
Call 911 first. Then report the person in the app so we can act on our side.
Your data and deleting it
How do I download my data?
In the app, open Profile, tap the Settings gear, then Your data and tap Download my data.
How do I delete my account?
In the app, open Profile, tap the Settings gear, then Your data and tap Delete my account. You'll type DELETE to confirm.
What gets deleted, and what's kept?
Your profile, photos, roommate answers, move plans and documents are deleted, and your messages are cleared. Rent numbers you shared stay in the combined totals, but they're no longer linked to you.
A few records are kept because the law or safety requires it: payment records for accounting, background-check records the law requires, and safety reports, which keep no name.
